The Ultimate Showdown: A Comprehensive Comparison of the Paleo Diet and Plant-Based Diet

There are so many different types of diets out there that are available to use and adapt. As we are at the peak of summer time, and we all want to look our best during this season, I thought I would spend the next few weeks going through the different types of diets, and compare them. Let me know in the comments which diets you would like me to have a look at!

So for this week I thought it would be great to discuss the low plant and the paleo diet.

Paleo Diet:

This is also known as the caveman or primal diet, which copies the eating habits of our ancient ancestors during the Paleolithic era. The idea behind this is that our bodies are best adapted to the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors and that following a similar eating pattern can lead to improved health and well-being. It is mainly made up of foods that could be hunted, fished, or gathered, such as lean meats, fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. It excludes processed foods, grains, legumes, dairy products, refined sugar, and most vegetable oils.

Here are some of the guidelines of the paleo diet:

Focusing on whole, unprocessed foods:  organic, grass-fed, and wild-caught meats, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Avoiding processed and packaged foods, which often contain high amounts of saturated fat, salt, sugar, additives and preservatives.

Consuming lean meats, like chicken, turkey, beef, and game, are encouraged.

Consuming fish and seafood, which are excellent sources of protein and healthy fats.

Plenty of vegetables for vitamins and minerals such as leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, and carrots.

Healthy fats: like avocados, olives, coconut oil, nuts, and seeds

Avoiding grains and legumes:  wheat, rice, and corn, beans, lentils, and peanuts, are excluded from the paleo diet due to their high carbohydrate and anti-nutrient content.

Minimising processed sugars: Refined sugars and sweeteners, including table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners. Natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup are consumed in moderation.

Staying hydrated: Water is essential for overall health, so remember to drink enough water throughout the day.

Staying active: engaging in regular exercise and leading an active lifestyle is encouraged for optimal health benefits.

Plant Based Diet

A plant-based diet is a lifestyle choice that focuses on consuming foods derived from plants, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It eliminates animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, and honey. This diet offers many health benefits including low in saturated fats and cholesterol, increased fibre intake, vitamins, and minerals. This can help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

It is important to include a variety of plant-based protein sources such as beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and edamame. Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and oats provide energy and essential nutrients. Including a range of fruits and vegetables ensures a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Plant-based fats from sources like avocados, olives, nuts, and seeds can provide healthy fats that are beneficial for brain health and overall well-being.  When adopting a plant-based diet, it is essential to ensure adequate intake of nutrients that are commonly found in animal products, such as vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients can be obtained through fortified foods or supplements if necessary. In addition to the health benefits, a plant-based diet is also more environmentally sustainable. It requires fewer natural resources like land, water, and energy compared to animal-based agriculture. Overall, a plant-based diet can be a healthy and sustainable choice that promotes well-being and reduces the environmental impact.

It is important to state that any diet that is undertaken it is best to consult with a Registered Nutritionist or a Dietitian first to ensure that these are suitable. They can also advise best other alternatives (like the Eatwell Guide) that can also give the best impact, without too much compromise on others.

Food is fuel to your brain. It's what keeps you going, and it has a direct impact on how your entire system works.
